Single-band VLBI Absolute Astrometry

چکیده

Abstract The ionospheric path delay impacts single-band, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) group delays, which limits their applicability for absolute astrometry. I consider two important cases: when observations are made simultaneously in bands, but delays only one band available a subset of observations; and one-band design. developed optimal procedures data analysis both cases using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) ionosphere maps, provided stochastic model that describes errors, evaluated impact on source position estimates. demonstrate the is accurate at level 15%. found GNSS maps as introduces serious biases estimates declination procedure almost eliminates them. serendipitously have multiplicative errors to be scaled by 0.85 order mitigate bias. A similar scale factor was comparison vertical total electron content from satellite altimetry against maps. favor interpretation this scaling manifestation inadequacy thin-shell ionosphere. showed we able extent no noticeable systematic emerge assess adequately contribution ionosphere-driven random positions. This makes single-band astrometry viable option can used determination.

Maser Astrometry with VLBI and the SKA

We discuss the unique opportunities for maser astrometry with the inclusion of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) networks. The first phase of the SKA will enable observations of hydroxyl and methanol masers, positioning the latter to an accuracy of 5 microarcseconds, and the second phase may allow water maser observations. These observations will provi...

Space - VLBI phase - reference mapping and astrometry

We present 5 GHz space-VLBI observations of the quasar pair B 1342+662 / B 1342+663 that demonstrate the feasibility of phase-reference techniques using an antenna in space. The space-based data were taken by the satellite HALCA, of the space-VLBI mission VSOP. From residual (referenced) phases we derive an upper bound of 10 meters to the uncertainty of the spacecraft orbit reconstruction. An a...

Improved VLBI astrometry of OH maser stars

Aims. Accurate distances to evolved stars with high mass loss rates are needed for studies of many of their fundamental properties. However, as these stars are heavily obscured and variable, optical and infrared astrometry is unable to provide enough accuracy. Methods. Astrometry using masers in the circumstellar envelopes can be used to overcome this problem. We have observed the OH masers of ...

VLBI observations of two single dMe stars: spatial resolution and astrometry

We report on 3.6 cm VLA and VLBA observations of YZ CMi and AD Leo, two nearby dMe stars. We resolve YZ CMi and can fit a circular symmetrical gaussian component of FWHP of 0.98 ±0.2 mas, corresponding to an extent of the corona above the photosphere of 1.77 × 1010 ± 8.8 × 109 cm or 0.7 ±0.3 R? (R? refers to the photospheric radius). We obtain an estimate of the brightness temperature of 7.3 × ...

Precision VLBI astrometry: Instrumentation, algorithms and pulsar parallax determination

This thesis describes the development of DiFX, the first general–purpose software correlator for radio interferometry, and its use with the Australian Long Baseline Array to complete the largest Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) pulsar astrometry program undertaken to date in the Southern Hemisphere. This two year astrometry program has resulted in the measurement of seven new pulsar par...
